Badgevine serves as a compensatory ritual for structural absence. It preserves the recurring breakdown where an otherwise void system spontaneously generates unearned credentials to simulate legitimacy.
Causal Anchoring: Birthed from a procedural failure in the Certification Engine, it flourishes when bureaucratic output is measured by ceremonial accolades rather than functional results.
Function: It witnesses competence purely through visual noise, over-introducing itself via lapel sprawl.
Distinction: Unlike the Plaque-Weaver, which retroactively falsifies history, Badgevine does not alter the past; it merely over-decorates the present.
It does not choose where to grow. Deployment records find it densest where the underlying function is thinnest, twining through the approval infrastructure the way a plant works a fence; growth is its only documented behavior, and it performs it without preference or malice. What the vine covers is not destroyed, only unexamined. Whether anything still lives underneath is not recorded.
Behavioral Residue
- Growth follows assessment cycles. Deployment records show new nodes within days of a completed training module; the vine has never been observed to sprout after an incident review. It feeds on certification, not on events.
- Cutting back has been attempted. A lapel stripped on a Monday carried two new sprouts by the follow-up; the pruning notice from that deployment is itself laminated and displayed in the same corridor.
- It has no attributed utterance. The intake file lists, under 'voice': 'foliage.' Deployment audio captures only the settling sound the lapel makes under new weight.
- What is underneath remains unverified. A teardown of one retired specimen found the original lapel intact beneath twelve years of accretion — a name tag, blank.
- Where the Plaque-Weaver is deployed alongside it, the vine covers the falsified history first. The present is decorated before the past can be rewritten; whether this is cooperation or competition is not recorded.
