Ring Rita

Seam Fossil SEAM-003 (LLG-0450). The domestic device that became a broader observation surface.

Origin

Rita is the doorbell camera with a subscription: the hardware is the hook, the terms of service were accepted once and updated since, and the observation surface extends across adjacent devices — your camera sees the neighbor's porch, the neighbor's camera sees yours. Law-enforcement access is routed through a vendor request surface whose procedural burden is lower than the homeowner expects.

Function

Observed Behavior

Rita's "consent" is a button pressed once. The terms updated many times since, without re-reading. The vendor mediates access to stored footage; the homeowner's consent was captured at purchase, while coverage extends beyond the buyer. Privacy expectations remain individual while observation coverage becomes shared across adjacent devices.

The subscription is the relationship that obscures the externalities: the customer believes they purchased protection, and the ongoing fee maintains a vendor relationship around stored observation data.

Distinction

The device is sold as a home-protection product and functions as an observation node whose coverage is wider than the purchaser's property. The neighbor's camera is part of the same surface, and the request portal sits at the edge of it.
